Out of Christian conviction, the MALTESER are committed to helping people in need with personal dedication, thus making a valuable contribution to society.
The Malteser, here at Börseplatz, specifically the "Malteser Hospital Service Austria," are a charitable aid organization with over 2,200 volunteer members dedicated to caring for people with disabilities, visiting the sick, and providing rescue and disaster services.
Their mission is to live out faith in service to the poor and sick, a mission they have fulfilled for over 900 years.
The Eightfold Misery
The Malteser have taken on the task of combating the so-called eightfold misery, symbolically represented in the Maltese cross. These eight forms of misery are:
- Illness:
Through medical care and personal attention, the Malteser alleviate the suffering of sick people. - Hunger:
With food aid and sustainable projects, they fight against malnutrition and for food security. - Guilt:
They offer support and companionship to people confronted with feelings of guilt or social ostracism and promote paths to reconciliation. - Unbelief:
Through spiritual offerings and educational work, the Malteser strengthen people's faith and trust. - Homelessness:
Homeless assistance and refugee support provide protection and new perspectives for the homeless. - Abandonment:
Visitation services and social initiatives give lonely and isolated people community and attention. - Indifference:
Through sensitization and active charity, the Malteser counteract social indifference. - Lovelessness:
'With various charitable projects, they promote a culture of love and compassion.
. Since their founding over 900 years ago, the Malteser have been committed worldwide to alleviating suffering and assisting those in need. In Austria, around 1,800 volunteers are currently active in various works of the order, including the Malteser Hospital Service Austria, the Malteser AIDS Service, and the Malteser Palliative Service. Their common goal is to assist people in need and combat the eightfold misery.
Prayer
for the Malteser who start their mission from here:
Kind God, we ask you for all Malteser who serve their neighbors. Bless their hands that they may bring healing and comfort. Strengthen their hearts that they may act with love and compassion. Fill them with courage and patience when tasks become difficult. Let them feel your presence in their work and grant them joy in their service. Give them hope to carry on, and protect them on all their paths.
Amen.
Well-informed, the pilgrimage of faith continues.
